Four Horsemen Closes Its Doors

After two years of operation Four Horseman Brewing Company has abruptly closed.  This past Monday via social media they posted, "We want to thank all of our distributors, local establishments, consumers and supporters for enjoying our beer over the last couple years.  This is a decision made by the owners after careful examination of the craft beer segment, future growth and other factors”  Ben Roule commented.

Ben Roule is one of four owners in the brewery.  They purchased the Four Horsemen branding rights but were never able to replicate the former microbreweries recipes.  Growing up in the South Bend/Mishawaka area many people were familiar with the first Four Horsemen Brewery which was located along Main Street in Mishawaka.  When the original Four
Horsemen closed, Roule purchased the rights to the brand.  Unfortunately, the original beer that people enjoyed for years did not follow along.

You have heard it said before, "Quality over quantity".  Where Four Horseman failed is they made a bold jump to create quantity and distribute versus creating a quality product that would create a cult following.  Craft beer is not just about the beer...it's also about the people that support the brewery and enjoy the product.  Four Horseman seemed to have dreams of being in every grocery store and large distribution first..then creating a solid consistent product and winning over the people second.

This should be a warning to other micro startups....refine your product, create a brand, invite the people and grow naturally.  Good beer will always sell.
